Research - Activating Prior Knowledge and Building Background Knowledge

Advance organizers are a way to bridge prior knowledge to new learning (Orlich, Harder, Callahan & Gibson, 2001).

Activating prior knowledge is important for everyone, but ELLs need special attention connecting prior knowledge to content presented in a new language (Hill & Flynn, 2006, p.44).

Building background is also a necessary component for ELLs to be able to grasp new information presented in a new language (Hill & Flynn, 2006, p.44).
